Writing songs while traveling is a great way for artists to stay productive away from the studio. With an iPad and inexpensive music apps, musicians can develop song ideas from anywhere, whenever the inspiration strikes. Watch author Garrick Chow and his band The Jellybricks write a song while on the road to a gig in New York City. Hit the road with with a touring band and see the tools they use to write, and watch the process of the song taking shape in real time. If you're interested in the more technical side, Garrick will review the mics, cables, keyboards, and apps he uses to record on the road. Then, back at home, he jumps into GarageBand to demonstrate techniques for moving files between the iPad and Mac, as well as mixing and sharing the track. The course wraps up with a full band live performance of the new song in their rehearsal studio.

A long overdue show, this week I return to Garageband on the Mac.

It's been quite a while (can you believe 2008!) since I looked at Garageband on the Mac and since then the app has had a complete re-write.

It may have lost Podcast support, but with a new user interface and some stunning new features, it's still an extremely powerful and impressive application.

In the first of a three part series, I initially take a look at the basics of Garageband, following up next week with a look at some of the more new and advanced features.

The full tutorial covers:

Installation and Introduction
GarageBand User Interface
Additional Instruments & Loops
Using Loops

Say you've got a creative spark for a song idea and want to compose, record, and mix it into a song, using Apple GarageBand. In this 90 minute series, Eli Krantzberg shows you how you can use GarageBand to make it all happen, step by step.

Eli starts by explaining the series, and giving you a preview of the song, called "Hello Fun." The next videos are all about Song Buildup, Laying Down the Beat, coming up with a Chord Progression and Baseline for the Verse, creating a Pre-Chorus, then a Chorus.

Once the parts start taking shape, Eli dives into expanding the song with Pads and Pitch Risers, forming an Introduction, and adding String Synths to the Chorus.

With the parts formed, Eli now turns to song structure and developing the arrangement. With the song itself beginning to form, he spends the next few videos showing you how to Add and Edit Vocals and Guitars before finally Finishing off the Mix and sharing it with the world.

If you're new to GarageBand, maybe even to digital music in general, "First Song in GarageBand" will get you started on the path of complete song creation!
