Sound DUST Modular Chaos Engine v1.1 Found KONTAKT
A chaotic drum machine for a chaotic world.

For the past 10 years or so I've always carried some kind of portable recording device and a pair of OKM in ear microphones around with me and kept a kind of aural diary of great sounding things and great sounding places. I've made literally gazillions of recordings in places all over this side of the world, and like most diaries these recordings have mainly been sitting in dark cupboards waiting for someone to rediscover them..

The Modular Chaos Engine is the perfect repository for 785 of them. I've selected the most usefully percussive, clangy, bangy, thumpy, boomy, itchy, scratchy, thwacky and whacky, added a really powerful sequencing engine and made a "found sound" drum machine.

What's inside 1.1?

Synthetic Instruments (SI-KTK) is a CD-ROM library with 43 waveform sets and more then 250 individual synthesizer instruments. SI-KTK will work in Kontakt version 1.2 and up. SI-KTK's instruments are true subtractive synthesizer programs, taking advantage of Kontakt's synthesizer engine, filters and modulation capabilities. Carefully prepared and unfiltered audio spectrums has been programmed and sampled, using an Analogue Systems 5-VCO modular and a Waldorf Microwave XT. The instruments were made by combining the audio data with parameter and filter tweaking - inside Kontakt.

To form the instrument sounds and characteristics, Kontakt's filters, modulation routings are extensively utilized. Key velocity, pressure and modulation wheel are programmed for huge articulations. Amp and filter ENV parameters, controlled by key velocity, increases the sense of physical instrument behavior and feel..

The instruments are named by their sample set labels plus an indication of their styles - Bass, kbd, ld and pad. A wide mix of warm analogue style and ice cold digital modes. Evolving sounds, oscillator syncs, deep spacious pads, synth basses, detuned VCO patches with extreme saturation. But also chord friendly, thin and discreet instruments, suitable for piano style playing.

EVOLVE is powered by the NI Kontakt engine and is fully integrated into the Kontakt Player browser. On the main page, users are provided with control over ADSR, HIGH PASS FILTER (including cut-off and resonance), LOW PASS FILTER (including cut-off and resonance), and EFFECTS (including Skreamer, Lo-Fi, Cabinet, Reverb, and Delay).

EVOLVE also features the highly innovative ‘TRIGGER FX’ engine. Made up of 12 discreet effects (filter sweeps, delays, compression, panning, distortion, Lo-Fi, and more), the Trigger FX can be performed and recorded using a midi keyboard, or user-assigned CC Values. Within the presets of the Rhythmic Suites, Percussive Kits, and Stings and Transitions categories, this real-time FX performance tool can create radical transformations of the original sounds with the hit of a key.

Rhythmic Suites
Walls of cinematic percussion, punchy beats, and next-gen tonal elements make up 7 genre-specific loop suites (Dramatic EVOLVED, Dramatic Techtronic, Electro Tech, Industrial Elements, Industrial Grunge, Quirky and Cartoony, Rock Pop, and Tonal Suites.) Over 600 beat sliced loops arranged with an intuitive keymapping system.

Stings and Transitions
5 categories of otherworldly sounds like Uncharted Metals, Odd Noise and Buildups, and Atonal Stings, offer distinct new ways to heighten emotional impact. Perfect for adding terrifying sonic punctuation to a film soundtrack or bizarre textures to the breakdown of a pop song.

Tonality and FX
This mashed up array of instruments strays from the traditional "meat and potatoes” sounds. This category includes complex instruments and pads such as Frozen Piano and Lydian Choir Gods, bringing an innovative quality to your arrangements.

Percussive Kits
Over 40 modern percussive-type menus and drum-like kits containing sounds gathered from an array of bizarre sources (warehouses, amusement parks, murky stairwells, and more). Whether it’s a massive hit, an ear piercing screech, or a subtle clang, this category provides an enormous variety of sounds for beat production.

Seq and Arp
Utilizing a custom step-sequence arpeggiator, users can control Velocity, Pan, and Filter on nearly 60 presets, ranging from percussive hits to tweaked pianos. Develop your own groove, or choose one of the 12 factory presets to get started.

Here's your new sandbox full of toys! 88 instruments are waiting for you inside the main Kontakt patch. All samples have been recorded very close with high-end equipment (Nagra LB, KM185, Blue Dragonfly, AT4050, Rode NT4) in high definition (88.2kHz 24bit) in dry rooms.

Every sample is 'alive' and dynamic due to 10 random robins for every recording! Our GUI gives you access to a lot of transformations and modulations, all based on velocity. You can set filters, pitch, stereo effects and panning, ADSR envelope, play in reverse, offset and volume sound by sound.

You can choose to use random robins or not. Moreover, we added some great global effects on a second tab with a transient designer, EQ, flanger, chorus, phaser, tape saturator, lo-fi (bit crusher) and reverb.

Features:

• 5 main patches which are presets for the whole sandbox.
• 32 chromatic instruments
• 19 sound design patches made from the same sample pool!

The Sound Designer patches are unique little instruments in their own right. We will try and produce some examples of these as soon as we can.

NOTE: For the full retail version of Kontakt 5.3.1.37 or above only. Will only work in 'Demo' mode if you have the free version of Kontakt Player.
Forgotten Keys FK15 Bentley Rhythm Ace FR-3 V.4.2 KONTAKT Forgotten Keys FK15 Bentley Rhythm Ace FR-3 V.4.2 KONTAKT
All the names dotted about on the front panel and serial plate of this early analogue drum machine denote it as: Ace-Tone, Bentley, Rhythm Ace Full-Auto FR-3. Quite a mouthful! I’m going to stick with FR-3 from now on. The FR-3 was a very similar looking machine to the Korg Mini-Pops 3 in that it had the usual range of preset rhythms plus a selector knob that assigned variations to the left most rhythm button, 2 buttons in this case. Being an early machine, inductor coils or tuned tanks are used to create the drum sounds. Some of the individual sounds can only be isolated for sampling by messing around inside the machine, which is often the case.

The drum machine used for this project was very kindly lent to me by Steve at SynthMagic. He had just had it serviced so it worked perfectly and sounded very clean. Check out his site if you haven’t already.

Sounds
There are 8 sounds available on the FR-3 and they have all been isolated and sampled 8 times for the FK15. Unusually, the sounds are accented on certain beats. This is rarely seen on older machines and improves the rhythms considerably, especially the latin variety. The various accent levels have been sampled as well (8 times each) for all sounds that use it, making the rhythms very accurate to the original. When playing the sounds from your keyboard or DAW sequencer, these accent levels are assigned to velocity.

Rhythms
All the preset rhythms including the 2-beat and 4-beat variations have been re-produced for Kontakt. Rather than playing back sampled loops of the rhythms, the individual sampled sounds are triggered as and when needed. This is essentially how a real drum machine works except that the diode matrix has been replaced with Kontakt scripting and the sound generator circuit has been replaced with samples of said sound generator circuit.

Balance
The balance control of the FK15 adjusts the balance between the drum and cymbal sounds when playing one of the in-built rhythms. Far more control is to be had however by way of the Setup tab.

Setup
The Setup tab offers greater control over how the FK15 sounds and operates. There are volume, pan, tune and mute controls for each sound. Incoming MIDI notes can be mapped to any rhythm or sound and outgoing sounds can be assigned to any available Kontakt output. Random tune and volume controls add a little human element to the sounds.
