The string section contributes the most in orchestral music. This sample library therefore aims to help create MIDI orchestrations. It can be used on its own or "layered” with other string libraries to get a richer sound. The library is kept relatively small and utilizes the SFZ format that can be loaded with freely obtainable software. For flexibility, the samples have minimal reverberation.

The sfz library is tested with Plogue sforzando during development. Among the freely available software, sforzando has the best compatibility to sfz opcodes and is easiest to use. Hence, sforzando is recommended in case there are some issues with other sfz players. This has also been tested with Cakwalk Dimension (LE). Cakewalk is responsible for the SFZ specification. Some software are capable of using sfz libraries directly (Synthfont & MuseScore). However, these might not handle sfz as good as dedicated plug-ins do.

The Rosinspiel is a glockenspiel that has been played with a bow instead of a mallet.

It has a very unique soft, glassy like sound and its an incredibly unusual sample library – perfect for orchestral and underscore music.

The Rosinspiel is glockenspiel played with a bow instead of being struck with a mallet. The result is an unusual, silky sounding instrument with an almost ethereal string like sound.

The staccato samples sound like a celeste with a softer attack, while the sustains sound like a glass armonica with slight bow noise. The samples are tuned to match OrchestralTools’ The Glock.

Recorded with a close mic in 24 bit Mono

The Rosinspiel was close mic’d and recorded in mono as 24bit WAVs. Each sampled sustain is held for 8 seconds or longer with three dynamics recorded for each sustain. Crossfading is controllable via the mod wheel. – The physical instrument’s range is from G3-C6. The virtual instrument’s range is C3-C6.

In total there are 99 sustain samples with 3 velocity layers and 1xRR and 155 staccato samples with 1 velocity layer and 5XRR. It comes with 3 patches – bowed sustain, bowed sustain loop (credit to Park Bench) and staccato.

Karoryfer Samples Weresax for Sforzando Karoryfer Samples Weresax for Sforzando

Behold – the Weresax! Seemingly an innocuous alto saxophone sample library, sampled chromatically across the entire standard range of the instrument with two velocity layers and two round robins. It can even seem sophisticated and smoothly expressive with its vibrato controlled by nine parameters and three low-frequency oscillators.

But we thought that as long as we’ve got all these notes sampled, and we’ve got them looped for infinite sustain, why not layer them together and see if we can make them sound like an accordion. After all accordions, like saxes and harmonicas, use vibrating reeds to produce sound. And, well, it worked. It’s not a completely realistic accordion, of course, but it can pass for one in a crowd.

Keeping the momentum going, we added more layered voices and more controls, and also made a sxnth – a polyphonic subtractive synthesizer using looped sax samples for oscillators. With polyphony, up to five unison voices, AHDSR envelope, vibrato, resonant highpass filter and a resonant lowpass filter with envelope and LFO, it’s capable of organic variations of many classic synthesizer sounds.

Weresax features 256 WAV samples (24-bit), 3 SFZ instrument mappings, a GUI and 20 presets. Requires Plogue Sforzando version 1.845 or newer for all features to work.
Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra WAV SFZ Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra WAV SFZ
Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library. While not as advanced or ambitious in scope as commercial offerings, SSO contains all the basic building blocks for creating real virtual orchestrations. It’s primarily aimed at beginners, but also more experienced composers looking for something lightweight and/or portable might find it useful.

FORMAT

SSO comes in sfz format, which is a powerful, open, non-monolithic sample format. It consists of a plain text file with an sfz extension that holds all sample playback parameters, and a set of sound samples in wave format which are referenced by the sfz file. This means that sfz files can be edited with any plain text editor, and the samples can be edited with any audio editor that loads wave files.

COMPATIBILITY

Many samplers allow you to load sfz files, but few support all the format’s features. SSO works properly on Cakewalk Dimension Pro/LE, ARIA Engine, and the free SFZ Player. The library has also been tested on Shorcircuit 1, discoDSP HighLife and WusikStation 6, all of which appear to have very poor sfz support and are not recommended.

SAMPLES

The SSO samples are stereo, 16 bit, 44kHz. Melodic instruments and chromatic percussion are sampled in minor 3rds. Staccato/pizzicato patches have 2x round-robin. All samples have varying amounts of stage ambience, depending on their front-to-back placement, but in addition to that a good hall reverb is a must.
